"That's the window next door."Īt Lydia's insistence, we kept our window closed at all times. But this sound had definitely come from next door - the corner room. It wasn't unusual for there to be noise in the hallways since other people came in at all hours of the night. I sat up in bed and strained to hear it again. One night in early October I was woken up by a loud, grinding sound. Midterms were coming up in a couple weeks and I was determined to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my freshman year. Lydia and I found our stride and we spent more weekends studying than drinking. His name was Mike and he wasn't anything special just your standard frat pledge douche canoe.Īfter about a month on campus the novelty of college started wearing off. I'd known the girl since we were in diapers so I fully anticipated her having a boyfriend by the end of September. There were a lot of parties in those first few weeks, at one of which Lydia inevitably met a guy. Since Lydia was an outgoing and friendly person, we made friends at lightning speed. "Yeah, well, remember, people were apparently smaller back then." Lydia mumbled as she pushed her bed further away from the window. It would take a lot of commitment to squeeze out of that tiny window." "We could always move into the suicide room," I teased her, "That one has a window on each wall." "You know I fucking hate heights and just talking about that shit is raising my blood pressure." "Oh, fuck, Becca, can you not?" Lydia glanced at the window and visibly shuddered. "Can you imagine climbing out of that tiny window and jumping? You'd be alive for at least five seconds before you hit the ground." "Yeah, I guess." I turned to study the little window in our room. Every college campus has a few suicides." "Did you hear that bomb she fucking dropped?" Lydia dropped her book on the bed and stared out into the hall. Anyway, I'd just like to remind you that this is an all girls floor and guys are not allowed up here after 11."īefore we could reply to her Beth clapped her hands and with a quick "well, nice meeting you" she skipped out of the room. They’re not assigning anyone to that room. A hanging and a jumper if I remember right. "Oh, you don't want that room.” Beth interrupted. Is anyone assigned to that room or could we maybe-" "So," I said, "the corner room next to us - 733, is it? It looks a lot bigger than our room. "Yep, really." Beth pursed her lips and just continued to stand there, while the room filled with awkward silence. "Well, people were smaller in the 50s." Beth shrugged. "Yes, I can see that." I said looking around. "So anyway,” the RA continued, “I know our hall isn't as new as the south hall but trust me, there's a lot of history here. Lydia glared at her over the top of her book. "Is this the kraken from Pirates of the Caribbean?" "Wow, you girls really work fast,” she said taking in our made beds and hung up clothes.īeth picked up a drawing of Cthulhu that Lydia had done over the summer. "Hi girls, I'm Beth!" chirped the bubbly blonde girl as she bounded into our room. By the time our Resident Advisor came by I was taping up posters and Lydia was reading. Lydia and I spent most of the morning moving ourselves in. I wasn’t too bummed out, though at least they’d honored my request to room with my best friend. No, we found ourselves in the older wing of the building on the 7th floor. We had assigned to dorm room 734 which, it turns out, wasn’t one of the nice add-on rooms in the south hall. That's what they called room 733 - as if I didn't have enough to worry about on my first day as a freshman.

You can either use the pre-built Docker images for Hyperdock or run the sub-systems directly on the host(s). See the wiki for details on how to define the parameters space. Hyperdock supports grid search of parameters from lists and distributions. More about how to write a target image can found below. Logs from the target image are periodically tailed from the workers to the WebUI. Once the target image has evaluated the parameters it simply writes the loss to the file /hyperdock/loss.json with the option of storing important files to /hyperdock/out. Parameters are available in the json file /hyperdock/params.json. They only need to be able to access the same Mongo database and the workers need to have access to any data required by the target image.Įach program that should be optimized needs to have its own Docker image, the target image, that is setup to load the parameters and write progress reports. Supervisor, Workers and WebUI need not run on the same host. The entire Hyperdock system can be distributed, i.e. They continually send status updates to the database to notify the user of progress. The Hyperdock Workers dequeues jobs from the work queue and then evaluates the target image with these parameters. It determines what jobs (a specific hyperparameter combination) need to scheduled, which jobs have failed and should be restarted, and notifies users of results. The Hyperdock Supervisor is a background process that monitors all trials. All trials, their status and results are stored in a Mongo database. The Hyperdock Web UI is the main interface for the end-users from where they can specify trials (a target Docker image and the hyperparameter space to search over). The figure below shows the Hyperdock system and its main components. That means that the target can be written in any language, use any framework or run on any operating system as long as it can be made into a Docker image. Hyperdock is a framework for hyperparameter search that can be used to optimized any target as long as that target can be run in a Docker container. How can you help four million people? This is potentially more damaging than absenteeism because the employee who has come to work, will receive compensation, but will not be producing the work that’s expected. According to 73% of mobile workers and 71% of telecommuters, providing work that could be considered “average” was a “terrible thought.” Additionally, only 27% of mobile workers and 29% of telecommuters would be satisfied with “good” work over being “the absolute best.”įlexible work arrangements are a direct hit to “ presenteeism,” a term created to describe productivity loss from employees who go to work, but are disengaged. The same study mentioned above found that employees who had a mobile work structure were less comfortable with being mediocre in their performance. In this case, telecommuters are those who primarily work in a home office and mobile workers are those that use multiple work spaces in and out of the office. The survey also found that of the employees who reportedly love their jobs: One survey of over 3,000 employees found that people who telecommute are twice as likely to love their jobs than those who don’t. They will know they are trusted to complete their work and uphold their promise as an employee without having to leave other priorities behind. Of course, when an employee feels the sense of appreciation and freedom within their role, they ultimately feel more connected to the job they hold. 41% said there was high turnover and fatigue.Of the employees who say they lack work-life balance within their current job: If they choose their job over other responsibilities, there will undoubtedly be some resentment and disengagement as a result. If an employee doesn’t have that feeling of support, they might begin to feel like they have to make a choice between their job and their life. Everything from roles as caretakers, professional and educational pursuits or simple health appointments can cause disruptions in a traditional work schedule.Įmployees who know they have the flexibility to coordinate their work around those challenges feel understood and capable of balancing their roles in and out of the organization, and that’s exactly what you want. In other words, people have responsibilities outside of their position within your company. The purpose of a flexible schedule is rooted in support and appreciation for employees as people with complex lives. There are many things to gain from a correctly implemented work-flex program: 1. Regardless of the structure, flextime is all about allowing employees the freedom to work with less constraints. Maybe one company designates specific days that everyone must be in office while another allows employees to work remotely full-time. One company may require the employee to work at least 8 hours within a 10 hour window each day, while another might require employees to adhere to a more rigid set schedule with a half hour of leeway on either side of the shift. That means the organization that is interested in establishing a flextime program can set the structure as they see fit. There is no set definition of flex work and no legal requirements or standard expectations for when an employee should be working. Could #flextime be the answer? What is Flextime? Of course, “flexible” takes on different meanings based on the needs and structure of the business.Ħ0% of employees who lack work-life balance experience poor morale. The benefits, in most cases, outweigh the challenges. There are more than a few reasons a company might incorporate work-flex and remote options within their employment structure. One survey of marketing and advertising executives found that 76% of companies offered some form of flexible work arrangement. With less need for the amenities of a traditional office, comes less need for the traditional 9-5 work schedule. Most releases would be content with tossing in the world rotation gimmick and calling it a day. Death and trial and error are at the heart of And Yet It moves, so get used to both and you'll be in for some great discoveries.Īnalysis: It won't be immediately apparent when playing And Yet It Moves, but this is one of the more creatively designed games you've seen in some time. Checkpoints are graciously deployed at short intervals, allowing you to take a snapshot of your progress so when you die (and you will), you can restart without having to trek through half the level. Much like the equally enchanting indie release VVVVVV, And Yet It Moves employs the "die often, respawn often" philosophy of game design. This becomes less of a problem when you learn how to mitigate the effect and coast to a smooth landing. This becomes a problem when you realize how fragile the main character is and falling too far causes him to go "splat" (or, more accurately, "fall to pieces"). When rotating the world, any momentum you had going is continued in the new orientation. Learning to use momentum is the key to mastering the game, and it's something that will take practice before you can get it just right. But it's the kind of foe you can twist around and use for good. While it may be your best friend when you pour a glass of milk and watch as it doesn't fly off the counter, physics ends up being your main foe in And Yet It Moves. When the world flips, you get pulled in a new direction, allowing physics to turn you into its little plaything. You can walk, you can jump, and you can rotate the world clockwise or counterclockwise as you see fit. You play as an unnamed character who looks like a scribble on a piece of paper. And Yet It Moves then proceeds to do crazy and wonderful things with this, allowing you to explore a universe as strange as it is satisfying. It might even do both! The physics-centric platform adventure employs the familiar "world tilting" mechanic that allows you to rotate the entire game environment in 90 degree increments. That, or it will cause you to shake with anger as you replay the same part of the game for the tenth time. And Yet It Moves, the simple but marvelous indie release from Broken Rules, will reignite your love for video games. Up to 60% of RK patients complain of diurnal fluctuations. However, long- term sequelae of patients who have undergone RK include diurnal fluctuations and progressive hyperopic shift that have continued to affect RK patients years after surgery. His findings were supported by another survey of 62,814 cases performed by Marmer, published in 1987, who found that less than 1% of patients experienced a decrease in visual acuity after RK. Although the rate of complications from RK is difficult to ascertain, Salz performed a review of 935 eyes from the Prospective Evaluation of Radial Keratotomy (PERK) study in 1984, and concluded that RK was safe with a relatively low rate of complications. Other refractive procedures have largely supplanted RK, and it is now very rarely performed. Hundreds of thousands of patients have undergone radial keratotomy (RK) for the correction of myopia since its introduction in the 1970s. 10 Traumatic rupture of keratotomy scars.4 Incorrectly placed incisions & optical zone decentration.I gather those are my only options for fixing my HOA issues? Ideally, I'd like to avoid surgery but then I also don't want to have to wear RGP contacts the rest of my life. They never mentioned that my pupils were so large that this would be an issue but maybe those drops that stop your pupils getting too large could help? When I look through a pinhole all the HOAs are gone which makes me depressed as I can see what my vision used to be like when I had glasses. Do lasik clinics ever offer RGP lenses as an option? The glare I get off screens is much more annoying for me than the starbursts I get from driving at night (when I am just trying to get from A to B rather than relaxing and enjoying myself). I have also looked at RGP contact lenses but, as I mentioned I have never worn contacts but if it is the only way I can comfortably watch TV and play games again then I'll have to do it. Has anyone had success with enhancement surgeries to get rid of the haze/glare/starbursts/halos etc? They didn't mention that there was an undercorrection or anything in the followup appointments after 6 months so I don't even know if they will offer that as a solution, or if it would work. I am probably in their records as a "success". I am scheduled to go back to the lasik clinic in January when I will tell them about my problems, I should have gone back years ago. I know I can't go back in time and undo what was done. I assume the lower left eye lid pulsing is to do with constantly battling to keep it in focus and dryness tiring out the muscle. I am hopeful glasses I have ordered from the opticians (left +1.00 right +0.25) will help me with this focusing issue though. My eyes also feel dry and I always feel my left lower eyelid palpitating a lot and I have trouble keeping focused as my eyes feel tired and want to "zone out" when watching TV, driving or doing anything that involves looking in one place for a while. My HOA/night time vision issues have not improved since day one, I still get a big circle of light below (and a thinner streak above the light) LED lights and what I used to love doing the most (watching movies etc) has become a chore as every single lighter object on the screen emits a hazey streaky light around it. I was young and stupid and seriously regret my decision, it was free for me and just expected my vision to be fine. I was about 21 when it was offered to me by my mother (who just had it redone after getting it done originally decades ago) and I didn't look at the possible side effects at all really. I wore glasses my entire life all day every day so I was used to them and never even considered wearing contacts let alone lasik. I had lasik about four and a half years ago, my eyes were pretty bad before and I had an astygmatism, but obviously because I had the money I was a "good candidate". Skip to the last few paragraphs for my main questions. Sorry for the long post, just getting it off my chest. |
